Airstream
IIn 2018, Sara and I remodeled an Airstream travel trailer we found in Reno. The interior needed a complete redesign to function as a long-term living and work space.
The remodel included replacing carpet with hardwood flooring, removing the front couch and installing a custom u-shaped couch with underseat storage, relocating the electrical breaker panel from above the bed to the closet, replacing the air conditioner, adding a composting toilet, and building a combination desk and kitchen prep table.
Sara fabricated all seat cushions and the mattress from foam and latex rubber with custom-ordered covering material. I built new window headers, which she wrapped in matching fabric along with the window drapery ends.
It was a lot of work, but by the time we were done the Airstream was pretty comfortable on the inside, despite looking a little worn on the outside. We were able to travel back out west, spending a lot of time in the Rocky Mountains.
Traveling by RV allowed us to really connect not only with the place, but with the local people. Everything looks different when you are immersed in it, and suddenly small towns in flyover states we used to drive past without paying attention, became places with interesting stories, rich history, and welcoming people.
We spent several years traveling in it, primarily throughout the Rocky Mountain region, before eventually upgrading to the Eagle motorcoach.
