While in Guatemala, in every town we visited, and on every major road, these brightly painted buses were a common sight. They are privately owned, and each have regularly scheduled (although rarely punctual) routes between the various towns and villages. It is a very inexpensive way for people to travel.  The local people call them chicken busses, because the operators like to squeeze as many people inside as possible, often leading to more people than seats.
