For 5 months Sara and I were Camp Hosts at City of Rocks State Park near Silver City, NM. The back row in the picture above was occupied by the hosts, we are the red Eagle in the middle.
We had no intention of being camp hosts, but after staying at the park for a few days, we were asked if we might be interested. Ray, the only host there at time time, convinced us that is worth exploring, so we scheduled a meeting. The Manager, who at this park is also the Law Enforcement Officer, was very accomodating and suggested that they needed help on the weekends. In exchange for a campsite, Sara worked in the Visitor Center and I drove a Gator around helping people and cleaning sites. So, what started as a short stay on our way to Texas, turned into 6 hours per day, Saturday and Sunday, for 5 months over the 2024-2025 winter season.
It was quite the experience, and we both learned a lot in the process. While it is unlikely we will be doing that again, it was definitely a memorable experience, and highly recommened for anyone who has the time.
